Summary: Category Buyer is an advanced position in purchasing. Under minimum supervision, responsible for assuring the continuous supply of assigned components in order to maintain the required production levels at optimum cost consistent with quality and quantity specifications. Responsible for category spend and can support complex buying, working with Category Buyer Supervisor, Category Manager and Materials Manager. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of parts, within assigned components, to meet stated goals of inventory while maintaining production schedules.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Use MRP (Material Requirements Planning) to maintain proper inventory levels
  • Buyer should completely understand product flow through import / customs and broker process
  • Owning all functions of the supply chain from purchase order release through stock requisition. This includes issuing of purchase orders, scrap reports and debit memos/delivery receipts, cycle counts, etc.
  • Interfaces with Supplier Quality Assurance and Category Manager on production part PPAPs and quality regarding supplier issues
  • Assist the Category Manager in the development and implementation of the category strategy as well as price and terms/conditions negotiations to ensure proper cost management
  • Control expedited  freight costs Implement, comply and work to continuously improve the supplier development process
  • Knowledge of the written procedures, documents and forms used to measure, analyze report and score supplier performance to  stated requirements
  • ECN review/sign off ensuring proper inventory levels are maintained not impacting EOZ or production
  • Implement inventory replenishment programs that support business objectives and control inventory levels by monitoring turns by line item, supplier and commodity with an emphasis on “right-sizing” inventory levels through PFEP (plan for every part) tool
  • Determining targets and action plans to achieve proper inventory levels to support 100% OTD to customers
  • Communicates frequently with internal and external contacts on various issues


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent from four-year College or technical school or equivalent experience
  • APICS (American Production & Inventory Control Society) and/or NAPM (National Association of Purchasing Management) certification is preferred
  • Continued education is highly recommended

Specificskills, knowledge, and/or licenses:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and Outlook software
  • Working knowledge J.D. Edwards operating systems is beneficial
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills are necessary
